First grade is the first year that students will experience homework, tests, and the Accelerated Reader program. It is crucial that your student receive support at home to be successful in first grade. The time spent on homework each day should total to be 15-25 minutes.
Word packs: Each student will receive a word pack, or an envelope of 15-20 sight words, that they should practice every night. The students will be tested on these words at least three times per week. Once your child can say the word within three seconds three different times, new words will be given to him or her. After learning the first 100 sight words, students graduate to the Accelerated Reader program.
Accelerated Reader: A.R. is a program that requires students to read leveled books and then take comprehension tests on those books. Once your student reads and passes three tests on one level, he or she can move up to the next level. A.R. books should be read three times each night. Please read to your child, with your child, and listen to your child read independently.
Basal Reader: Students will bring home their basal reading book every night. Please practice reading the story of the week with your child every night and ask the comprehension questions at the end of every story.
Spelling & Vocabulary Words: Students should practice spelling and reading all words and sentences on their list every night. Spelling and vocabulary tests will be given on the last day of each week. The new list will be passed out on Friday and located on the back side of your student's red communication folder.
Math Fact Practice: Students will be given one sheet of 20-40 math facts or a skills page to practice on Tuesday (due Wednesday), Wednesday (due Thursday), and Thursday (due Friday) of each week. Students should complete these facts on their own using the strategies learned in class.
All homework assignments must be completed and returned the next day unless otherwise stated on the homework or newsletter. If homework is not completed, your student will be required to complete it during recess.
